Everyone knows that mountainous places have many abrupt slopes and riding a bike up and down in such routes requires strong understanding of this sport.
Mountain bike orienteering is one of new sports among the other ones. It began its development at the end of 20-th century. This sport was considered to be an outdoor sport in some countries, where mountain biking was popular and it was organized and held by some clubs. But alongside with the development and dissemination of foot orienteering and sky orienteering, many people have started to go in for mountain bike orienteering.
As a result, International Orienteering Federation was opened and accepted by International Olympic Committee. In 1997 first MTB Orienteering national competition was held and representatives over 12 countries took part in.
The interest and number of contestants in this sport is increasing year after year, and many countries apply for taking part in World Championships in Mountain bike orienteering.

Competitions are taking place every year and International Orienteering Federation accepts applications both from separate individuals and teams. It is not surprising because IOF includes and cooperates with nearly 80 national orienteering federations from different countries.
